Close For Comfort Theatre Company
GLENN JOHNSON and JANET GILL
GLENN JOHNSON and JANET GILL
Close for Comfort Theatre Company take live theatre to people's living rooms!

There are only two actors in the company, JANET GILL and GLENN JOHNSON.

The homes they've visited so far have been quite different: from a small group of friends in a flat in south London to a house party at a manor in Warwickshire.

They ask for the use of a sofa, a chair and a small side table as they only travel with props and costumes: your living room is their stage!

They have one stipulation, that their audience is comprised of 10 or more people.

An evening with them lasts about 2 and a half hours: 2 hours performing, with half an hour interval.

They consider plays for production that are set in one room, for two actors, of appropriate length.

At the moment they are presenting two one act plays:

Dossier: Ronald Akkerman by Susanne Van Lohuizen

This is a play about a community nurse and the relationship that has grown between her and her long-term patient.

A gripping story from Holland by the award-winning Dutch playwright

The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish by David Tristram.
Henry and Alice Smith are bored with their marriage and resort to daydreams to liven up their days. This hilarious comedy takes us from one outrageous fantasy to another until they both realise that happiness is to be found on their own sofa - or is it? Only Orca knows the truth......

In 2000 Janet was trying to take theatre to unusual spaces and considered a range of alternatives.

She found a theatrical soulmate in Glenn Johnson when they met in Theatre Proteus production of Hysteria by Terry Johnson at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking in January, 2001.

One of her ideas had been to take theatre to living rooms and she had been searching for an actor with a sense of adventure and not a little bit of daring!

Glenn worked for 10 years as a civil servant until he trained as an actor at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

Before Close for Comfort he did other theatre and independent film work, and he toured with a theatre-in-education company.

A qualified teacher, Janet studied theatre at university and later took a part-time two year drama course at the City Literary Institute in London, studied theatre and education at Central School of Speech and Drama, and then formed a fringe theatre company in 1996.

It was while she was trundling up and down between her home in Surrey and small theatres in London that she thought of Close for Comfort.

Janet said, "Acting in living rooms can be daunting, but is ultimately very rewarding. One can be very natural: there is no need, obviously, to speak loudly, and small movements are easily noticed.

There is no hiding behind the safety of the proscenium arch for us!

The rapport with our audiences is also very satisfying. We perform to private parties so we always appear in front of groups of friends who are comfortable in each other's company.

When we finish acting our hosts inevitably ask us to share some wine with them - always something we encourage! We thoroughly enjoy what we do and hope to share our theatre with many more people."

They get asked to perform at birthday parties, anniversary parties, house-warming parties.... and parties given for no particular reason!

At first the possibility had crossed their minds that audiences in domestic settings would be intimidated by the intimacy of the setting, but many people seem to have been delighted with their brush with a live performance and some have had the couple back for a second occasion!

They do emphasise that audience participation is NOT on the menu, something that would put many people off.

They have received widespread interest in their work, not only in the UK but also from abroad: they've been interviewed by a Japanese radio station and discussed by newspapers in Spain, South Africa and India. They were featured on television in Virginia, Bratislava and Singapore before they were filmed by BBC Television in June and October.
