Exbury rhododendrons and spring-flowering shrubs have scooped
top prizes at the two main Royal Horticultural Society shows
this month. At
the RHS Main Rhododendron Show at Borde Hill, Sussex this weekend
head gardener Rachel Foster and her team stole the show with
17 awards – 11 of which were first prizes.
“We were delighted with our success as we were up against stiff
competition with gardens such as Nymans, Leonardslee, the Royal
Botanic Garden, Edinburgh and Windsor Great Park all entering,” said
Rachel.
“We
entered 19 classes and excelled with hybrid entries. All the
winning plants are out at Exbury now and will be looking stunning
for weeks.”
The
previous weekend, the Exbury team came away from the RHS Early
Spring Show in London with a fistful of awards for spring flowering
shrubs, magnolias and camellias – and rhododendrons
of course.
“Every so often we have one of those special years when everything
comes out looking spectacular – this is one of those years,” said
Rachel. “I can't believe just how beautiful the Garden is looking.”
Exbury's owner, Edmund de Rothschild, who was invited to open
the Borde Hill Show, was also delighted with the successful showing.
“My family has been breeding rhododendrons for generations,” he
said “The Exbury hybrids are world-famous and this year they
really are looking their best. I'm delighted that our visitors
are getting award-winning value when they come round the Gardens.”
Exbury Gardens are open daily from 10.00-17.30 |
