A teenager from the New Forest has become the first youth in the forest to be locked up for breaching an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO).

A youth under the age of 18 had an ASBO placed on him in July 2003 after causing constant nuisance in Hythe.

The ASBO was obtained by New Forest District Council and Hampshire Constabulary after the youth engaged in anti-social behaviour including setting fire to cars, criminal damage, theft and harassing residents.

New Forest magistrates' court has now sentenced the youth to a four month detention and training order at a young offenders' institute after he consistently breached the terms of his ASBO.

Anti-social behaviour orders were introduced to allow local authorities and the police to crackdown on trouble makers; and involve courts in the conditions relating to the future behaviour of the offender.

Head of New Forest police, Superintendent Barry Talbot said: "ASBOs are a very effective tool to help combat this type of nuisance behaviour and they can make a real difference to local communities and people's lives."

Cllr Goff Beck, portfolio holder for crime and disorder at NFDC said: "This should send a message to others that this type of behaviour is not acceptable nor will it be tolerated.

"This youth caused a lot of distress to residents in Hythe and hopefully this ruling will help improve the quality of life for people living in the area."
