A new glass collection vehicle has been launched by New Forest District Council to help increase the council's recycling rates.
The vehicle, which will was launched at Marsh Lane Depot at Lymington, can hold
23 tonnes of glass and will make the collection process more efficient with separate
compartments for green brown and clear glass.
Last year, residents exceeded 2003's record figure by taking 3,500 tonnes of
glass to NFDC's recycling centres around the district.
The new vehicle was built by Dennis Eagle with the special bin lifts provided
by Terberg Matec UK.
Glass production from recycled glass uses much less energy than conventional
production.
Recycling cuts the amount of waste going into landfill, with approximately 8
per cent of our rubbish being made up of glass bottles and
jars.
All of the glass recycled in the New Forest goes to the new Midland Glass reprocessing
plant in Southampton Docks where it is crushed, cleaned and loaded into ships
to be delivered to glass factories in Yorkshire.
There are 85 public recycling centres for glass in the New Forest and many centres
also have facilities to recycle paper, card, cans, plastic bottles and textiles.
Rob Colby, sales manager for specialities products at Terberg Matec said: "We
are very pleased to be involved with New Forest District Council's recycling
scheme.
"This is an exciting time for recycling with many initiatives being launched
in the country. We are looking forward to working with New Forest District
Council on similar projects."
Cllr Michael Thierry, portfolio holder for environment at NFDC said: "New Forest
District Council has one of the highest recycling rates in the country.
"We have set ourselves even more challenging targets for the next few years and
this new vehicle will help us achieve them."
