| • Calshot RNLI Open Day |

Sunday, was a glorious day, not only for the weather, but for the hundreds of people who visited Calshot Spit and enjoyed the Open Day organised by the Calshot Life Boat Station.
Among the crowds was Hampshire County Councillor Lee Dunsdon and his family. Cllr Dunsdon said: “I am very impressed by the professionalism of the RNLI Calshot Crew, and the rescue demonstration by the Coastguard Helicopter team”.
Visitors were able to look around the station and see for themselves the dedication and bravery that make the Life Boat crew at Calshot an asset to this part of Hampshire.
The day wasn’t all serious stuff, by any means, it was a fun – filled day, including face painting, rides on Trigger the Train, balloons, badges and a BBQ, and even the antics of the life boat crew, themselves, who good humouredly, (or perhaps because they were hot?), allowed themselves to be “thrown in the drink” at the end of the jetty!
The public were also able to experience, first hand, the work done by the Hampshire Technical Rescue Service, who are an independent Unit working alongside the Fire Service.
The Unit had set up ropes from an 80 foot high section of the Coastguard tower, situated at Calshot Spit, where they ably demonstrated their prowess in accessing casualties in difficult locations, and providing advanced pre-hospital care.
Funding for this group of specially trained personnel is provided by means of grants and equipment sponsorship.
The Unit base is at Lyndhurst Fire Station, and members are from all over Hampshire, including a Calshot RNLI crew member.
The team are derived from the emergency services, mainly of firefighters, but also include Paramedics.

Cllr Dunsdon, seen chatting to one of the team members, Dan Matthews, commented on the “Huge contribution that the Technical Rescue Unit makes to the safety of the people of Hampshire and visitors to the area, and that he would assist the Unit in accessing the appropriate grants from Hampshire County Council in order for the unit to continue to operate such as valuable service to the community.”
Both the RNLI and the Technical Rescue Unit give their time and skills for no more reward than to be of service to their fellow man, this kind of attitude is to be commended, particularly in a world where altruism is in short supply!
