Mobile phones and digital cameras are the latest tools that can
help
second-hand car buyers beat dodgy car dealers, according to a New Forest
police Inspector.
Inspector Dave Moore of Totton police is asking prospective buyers to take a
picture of the seller before agreeing a deal and parting with their money.
"Camera phones and digital cameras mean it only takes a few seconds to
capture an image. If you don't have one of these then use a ordinary
camera," said Inspector Moore.
This could assist us in making an arrest
later if the car turns out to be stolen. Genuine sellers shouldn't mind having
their picture taken if you explain
the reasons for doing so."
Taking photos of sellers is one piece of advice being offered under
Hampshire Constabulary's Safer Motors initiative. Other tips include paying
by banker's draft rather than cash and visiting the seller's home instead of
agreeing a deal in a car park.
The initiative aims to reduce the number of stolen cars being sold through
classified adverts and conning people out of money.
New Forest Community Safety Partnership is urging second-hand car buyers to
follow the advice which can prevent owners becoming a victim of this scam.
Cllr Goff Beck, portfolio holder for crime and disorder at NFDC, said: "If
you buy a second hand car which has been stolen and then register it, then
the police will come and take it away.
The new owner is left without a car,
out of pocket, and they can't claim on
their insurance. These pictures will stop car dealers attempting this scam and
will be used
to help trace those who think they can get away with it.
I hope people thinking of buying a car will heed this valuable advice."
