Junior School pupils were in jubilant mood after
winning the New Forest Primary Schools Sports Tag
Rugby Tournament on Friday 13th February The
tournament, held at the Ballard School in New Milton,
attracted 24 schools from across the New Forest and
over 300 boys and girls.
The
tournament was organised by the New Forest Cluster
of Rugby Clubs, which includes Ellingham & Ringwood,
Fawley, Fordingbridge, New Milton and Tottonians.
The
New Forest Primary Schools Sports Partnership, supported
by New Forest District Council and assisted by sports
and youth development officer Peter Brailey, aims to
reintroduce competitive sport between primary schools
from both the private and public sectors and to build
links between schools and clubs.
Athletics,
cricket, cross country, football, netball and rugby
events have been staged over the last year but the
largest event by far has been the Tag Rugby Tournament.
Winners
Poulner Junior acknowledged the support that Ellingham
and Ringwood Rugby club had given them for the event.
On
their way to the final Poulner took some notable scalps
such as Durlston Court Independent School from New
Milton, local rivals Ringwood Junior School and in
the final Orchard Junior School from Hythe.

Cashell, RFU Development Officer for the County, presented

School and New Milton Rugby Club.
Each
child also left with an RFU goody bag and certificate
of achievement as well as some snacks courtesy of Ballard
School. Cllr Barry Rickman, New Forest District Council's
portfolio holder for leisure, congratulated the team
on their success.
"One day these young people might be able to say that they once saw the next
Jonny Wilkinson on his or her first steps to sporting stardom," he said.
"With the feel good factor of England's World Cup win this tournament helped
provide a platform for a celebration of Tag Rugby.
We
are very pleased that the New Forest Primary School
Sports Partnership is helping to keep school and club
sports alive and kicking in the New Forest."
