New Forest District Council today issued a warning for householders to be on the look out for bogus council officials after a vulnerable man was persuaded to give out details of his bank account and pin number.

The man, from Pennington, received a visit to his house on Tuesday July 6 at 8pm, from a man claiming to be a NFDC official.

The bogus official said that the man owed the council £3000 but agreed to accept a payment of £1500.

The man was persuaded to hand over his cash card and pin number to the bogus official, supposedly to allow the council to remove the money from his bank.

The man was given the daytime number of the council if he wished to check up on the ‘official’, but was not shown any identification.

£300 was later removed from the man’s account at his bank in New Milton.

The bogus official was of average build and height, and was wearing silver rimmed glasses and a dark jacket.

“This is an alarming example of the unscrupulous and devious ways that such conmen try to trick members of the public and the elderly into handing over money and personal details,” said NFDC’s portfolio holder for crime and disorder, Cllr Goff Beck.

“It is vitally important that members of the public realise that council officials rarely visit householders late at night, and would never demand money on the doorstep in this way.

Identification should always be asked for at all times and genuine council officers would always be happy to wait while identification is checked, and for householders’ fears to be allayed.

“We are very sorry for the distress caused to the man in question and we hope that all members of the public will continue to be vigilant.

It is important to remember that personal details and financial information should never be given out to anyone without the proper authorisation and identification.”
