Last year the Browntail Moth was treated to a cocktail of female hormones in an effort to limit the population in the New Forest area.

This measure was taken to prevent the misery that the caterpillar stage of the moth's development can cause.

If touched by humans, contact with the caterpillar can produce skin irritation, headaches, nausea, vomiting, numbness, blisters and, in severe cases, breathing difficulties, due to their long poisonous spiky hairs.

The effects can last for several weeks, and possibly land you in hospital.

They are a common problem at this time of year, particularly in coastal regions, the New Forest, and the Isle of Wight, and the advice given is not to touch the creatures and make sure that children and pets steer clear of them.
