Hampshire County Council held their Annual Civic Service at Winchester Cathedral on Sunday 13th June 2004, to celebrate and acknowledge the significant role that volunteers play within the Hampshire County Community.
Fawley Parish was represented by some true unsung heroes who have worked tirelessly giving up their precious time to serve the community in some way.
Douglas Eaglen and his wife Helen, were just two of the people invited by the Chairman of Fawley Parish Council, Councillor Allan Glass who was accompanied by his wife and fellow Councillor, Christine Glass.
Councillor Glass said, "Douglas Eaglen has put his heart and soul into the Millennium Project for the villagers of Fawley, over the last six years, he has seen the project through from its conception in 1998, to its opening in May 2004.

He is a Governor at both Fawley Infants School and at Manor Infants School and has worked with both sets of parents, and Friends of both Schools campaigns against threatened closure to both schools. The Parish Council felt “that he deserves recognition for his community involvement"
The Chairman also invited Derek and Maureen Alderman who are the District Commissioner and Assistant District Commissioner for the New Forest East Sea Scouts.
Councillor Glass went on to say "The District Commissioner, Derek Alderman works extremely long hours in London all week, but he manages to find time at weekends to devote time to the New Forest East Sea Scouts with his wife Maureen, Assistant District Commissioner.”

Hampshire County Council also recognised and invited Philip Pearce Smith MBE, plus five Cadets from the Venturers Search and Rescue Service, who are based at Lepe Beach and watch over Southampton Water.
He set up the organisation in 1961, and runs the service with other volunteers who train the cadets to a very high standard, these dedicated young people, over the years have rescued hundreds of people in trouble, danger or distress on land and sea.
"Captain Tiffy", as the cadets know him, was very proud to have five cadets alongside him at the service.
Councillor John Bryant, Chairman of Hampshire County Council said of the attendees that "Their work is vital in delivering services that focus on the needs of user’s and of promoting the interests of local people.
In achieving our goal of insuring a better quality of life for everyone both now and in the future, the voluntary sector and those that unselfishly vindicate their time and energy to improving the lives of others, play a vital role in achieving this.”
He went on to say "Hampshire County Council's aim is to improve communication, understanding, collaboration, trust and respect between ourselves and the voluntary and community sector, in the true spirit of partnership to the benefit of the people of Hampshire.
This annual civic service is dedicated to those who play such an important role in service delivery at a local level.”
