• Douglas Eaglen.
Douglas Eaglen, who has dedicated himself to the community of Fawley, welcomed the community to the finished Millennium Project in The Square.

“Welcome to the village community and those who have participated in whatever way to the Millennium project for Fawley Village.

The idea for “environmental” improvements to The Square were first mooted in March 1998 at the inaugural meeting of the community based Millennium Group, chaired by Rev. Gary Philbrick.

In 1999, draft design proposals were prepared for the regeneration of the village centre, in the hope that this would attract Millennium Funding. Regrettably, after prolonged negotiations it became clear that the goal posts had been moved: - at that time it seemed as though the project was a dead duck.

Gordon Richardson

However, through the combined efforts of Gordon Richardson, former Parish Clerk, Paula Friedland of NFDC, Alexis McEvoy, then County Councillor, the late John Coles, Dr. Julian Lewis, MP for New Forest East, Exxon Mobil and numerous others of the community, we were able to get back on track.

In May 1999, a public consultation took place when initial proposals were displayed for public comment.

In December 1999, the first positive steps were taken to intiate the proposals by planting trees in the car park behind Jubilee Hall. This work was carried out by the kind generosity of Messers Trants.

In December 2000, the late Bill Peat unveiled the plaque on Blue Anchor House giving The Square, it’s official name.

In July 2002, the Golden Jubilee tree was planted in front of Jubilee Hall, the first of four which now form part of the project, and in particular, the children’s play area.

Having achieved funding from Fawley Parish Council; New Forest District Council and Hampshire County Council, a contractor to develop the project was appointed in March 2003.

The results are now to be seen and we are here to dedicate “The Square” particularly to the young, who will be able to watch the planting come to maturity.

Some of the youngest children from Fawley Infants School are with us today, both to sing for us and formally cut the ribbon as a symbol of commemoration”.

The children gave a hearty rendition of “John Brown’s Body”, as well as “She’ll be coming round the mountain” – (Hi Babe!), and finally a song about Fawley being in their minds, hearts, knees and toes!!!

The Rev. Barry James then dedicated The Square Project, by reminding us of the “new beginnings”, God promised us when he created the rainbow – just like the double rainbow seen over Fawley recently.

It was truly an historic occasion in the annals of Fawley Village.
