If it is then let the council take it away free of charge for you.
Since last November New Forest District Council has been
scrapping unwanted vehicles free of charge as part of a vehicle
amnesty.
The scheme has seen the number of abandoned and nuisance vehicles in the
area drop dramatically, which is good news for residents, visitors and the
environment.
Depending on the circumstances, an abandoned vehicle can normally cost
between £40 and £70 to be removed and destroyed.
Last year
492 cars were
abandoned in the area but since the amnesty was introduced the figure has
dropped to 197 and a staggering 672 cars have been removed free of charge.
Cllr Michael Thierry, NFDC's portfolio holder for environment, said that
many people are relieved that the problem of what to do with old unwanted
cars can now be resolved so easily.
But he warned that with the
introduction of stricter laws on the disposal of vehicles planned for
November, there may eventually have to be a charge for the service.
"Should anybody be thinking of scrapping their vehicle, it would be better
to do it before November, in case the price of scrap is affected and we have
to make a charge," said Cllr Thierry.
"Anyone who wishes to obtain help with disposal of their car or van can
phone our Customer Service Department on 01590 646123 and ask for an
application form, or drop in to their local council office."
