TV presenter Debbie Thrower popped into New Forest District Council's offices at Appletree Court, Lyndhurst recently to launch a major new initiative designed to improve access to local services.

TellyTalk provides users with access to a wide network of information and advice without having to travel from place to place.

TellyTalk puts people in direct contact with experts from New Forest District Council, Citizens Advice Bureaux, New Forest Disability Information Service, Sure Start and Jobcentre Plus - at the touch of a screen.

TellyTalk will even scan letters and forms in one place that can be picked up by someone else in another office, so matters can be dealt with quickly and easily.

With one touch of the screen Debbie linked up face to face via computer to Marcia Bell, Senior Benefits Officer at NFDC's Lymington Town Hall, and chatted about how to fill in benefit forms and how to verify her ID.

"TellyTalk was very easy to use and I got in touch with the benefits office straight away," said Debbie.

"Marcia talked through everything and didn't rush me. It's a definite step up from being put on hold at the end of a
phone line.

Being able to see a friendly face is an advantage for pensioners and others who like to communicate with someone they can see.

When you can see someone's face you know you have their attention."

Colin Wise, NFDC's portfolio holder for finance and support, said the aim was to provide people with the information they need in the easiest and most
convenient way.

"We have looked at what people want to know, the facilities available to them and their accessibility and, using the latest technology, we have introduced systems that couldn't be easier to use."

TellyTalk is part of easilink, an NFDC initiative designed to bring easier access to local information services.
