Tin cans magic into trees

There's proof for community-spirited New Forest residents that recycling really does pay dividends in the form of 89 new trees for the New Forest.

The trees have been awarded to New Forest District Council by recycling group Alupro in return for the New Forest's excellent record in recycling tin cans.

Each tree represents a tonne of cans that have been recycled, rather than going to landfill.

The trees, mostly cherry trees and silver birch, will be planted all over the Forest from this month (October).

Fourty five will be planted by the Woodland Trust while the remaining trees are being distributed to parish councils.

The council is backing a nationwide campaign which aims to get more residents to recycle more of their waste.

Events kick off with The Big Recycle, on Monday 18th October, a week of advertising and activities supported by TV impersonator Alistair McGowan.

The government has also produced a new website at www.recyclenow.com which provides useful hints and tips on recycling at home and at work and gives information on local facilities.

"I'd like to congratulate residents of the New Forest for their excellent record on recycling, which has been recognised by the award of these new trees," said Cllr Michael Thierry, NFDC's portfolio holder for environment.

"Many people are already very well organised with their recycling but there are still many households that could do better.

Often it is just a matter of simple changes in habit and this new website will help to make recycling much easier.

Recycling is a way that every individual can help the environment every day.  It's time to stop thinking of waste as rubbish.

So much of the waste we generate can be reused, recycled and transformed into something useful."

Further information is available from Emma Cookson, waste and recycling officer, on 023 8028 5938 or email emma.cookson@nfdc.gov.uk or from www.integra.org.uk
