It may be the last thing you want to think about in the warm weather but it's never too early to check whether your electric blanket is safe.
New Forest District Council has teamed up with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Hampshire County Council to offer residents a free MOT on their electric blankets.
Over the last six years, 46% of the 5,531 blankets tested in Hampshire have failed the safety checks.
The main problems have been that many are old, worn out, have poor wiring, broken controllers or have no protection against over-heating.
During the tests, residents can also take advantage of advice on consumer issues, fire safety and energy efficiency that will be on offer.
This service can be very beneficial in helping people, particularly the elderly, understand their rights and save money
Cllr Michael Thierry, NFDC's Portfolio Holder for Environment, said "It is important that electric blankets are checked regularly.
"These checks provide peace of mind to the people who attend them.
Everyone should have their blanket tested before the cold weather sets in and they need to plug it in."
`The checks are limited to two blankets per household, blankets less than 3 years old should not need testing.
The safety checks will be held at Lymington Fire Station, Avenue Road, Lymington on Monday 27th September; at New Milton on Tuesday 28th September and Hardley Fire Station on Thursday 30th September, between 9am and 5pm .
The safety checks are available by appointment only.
