| Now
the festive season is over, it's time to sort out all those
items that
can be recycled - drinks cans, bottles, packaging - and take them to your
nearest recycling point.
Paper, cardboard, cans, tins and plastic bottles can be recycled through
the kerbside clear sack scheme.
Glass bottles and jars even textiles and books can be deposited in the
appropriate containers at your local recycling centre.
Christmas cards can either be recycled in the clear recycling sack or taken
to any WH Smith or Tesco store - cards taken to these stores are recycled
to help the Woodland Trust charity generate new woodland.
Christmas trees can be recycled at the household waste recycling centres
at Marchwood, Efford and Somerley. The trees are taken to a centralised
composting facility in Hampshire, and transformed into Pro-grow - a fine
grade, organic soil conditioner.
Pro-Grow is rich in nutrients and trace
elements, and provides an ideal growing medium for plants. Added
to the garden it helps to break down heavy clay soils and adds humus to
light, sandy soils. Christmas trees can also be composted at home, or planted
in the garden if purchased with roots.
Cllr Michael Thierry, portfolio holder for environment said: "By taking
your old tree to be composted you can not only reduce the amount of waste
going into landfill sites, but also help to produce a product which encourages
new
plant life to grow. Residents who recycle can bring enormous benefits to
the environment."
Household Waste Recycling Centres are located at Efford, near Lymington,
on the A337; at Verwood Road, Somerley, near Ringwood, on the B3081; and
at
Bury Road, Marchwood - they are open 7 days a week from 8am to 4.30pm.
Pro-Grow can be purchased from the household waste recycling centres, from
local suppliers such as Hollybush garden centre, Brockenhurst (01590)
622839, and from CPL on 0800 328 6693.
