fight for survival with extra petitions to Hampshire County
Council. Fawley Infant School and Manor Infant School at
nearby Holbury have both won the support of New Forest East
MP Julian Lewis for petitions which he is handing on to
Hampshire County Council's education boss Don Allen.

FIREFIGHTERS have helped to make life a little brighter
for a five-year-old New Forest girl who lost almost everything
- including a beloved pet - when flames engulfed her home.
Amie Dixon and her parents were taken to hospital and treated
for the effects of smoke inhalation after fire destroyed
their bungalow in Ashdown Road, Fawley, on Friday.

of a big surprise. Every teddy bear who's been good - including
Snowy, Doughey, Millie and Peter - were in for a treat when
the nursery based in the Methodist Church Hall held a traditional
teddy bears' picnic.

battle to save school

HAMPSHIRE'S education chiefs were warned last night that
they will be "waking a sleeping tiger" if they
introduce plans to close Fawley's village school. Fawley
is one of the schools which have come under threat because
of a review of the infant and junior framework in the parishes
along the eastern edge of the New Forest.

RAGS ROW

A ROW has erupted over possible plans by the nuclear power
giant British Nuclear Fuels Limited to send its dirty and
radioactive rags and solvents to the edge of the New Forest.
Preliminary talks have taken place between BNFL and the
Environment Agency over the possibility of low level radioactive
waste being sent to the Shanks - formerly ReChem - hazardous
waste incinerator at Fawley from Sellafield.

flee as blaze wrecks bungalow

A FAMILY fled for their lives after a blaze wrecked their
Fawley bungalow in the early hours of this morning. Graham
and Rosemary Dixon, with their five-year-old daughter Amy,
managed to escape the fire, which broke out about 3.20am.

a major facelift. The first step in a scheme aimed at transforming
the run-down look of the area around Fawley Square came
with the planting of a tree donated by Fawley Refinery.
Hovercraft
daredevils race into action

HOVERCRAFT racing provided plenty of high-speed action at
one of Hampshire's top sports venues. Scores of competitors
from all over the UK took part in the three-day spectacular
at the Gang Warily centre in Newlands Road, Blackfield -
the second round of this year's national hovercraft racing
championship.

EDUCATION bosses are being urged not to destroy the future
of New Forest villages in a controversial shake-up that
could see a number of schools closed. Councillors and residents
have slammed proposals being considered by the county council
in a money saving measure that could see four infant schools
shut down.
